I've been in the vending business for about four years now and I've noticed a lot of ads on the internet selling success ideas. I don't believe in paying for these things and never have. If you'd like some free information on what to do and what not to do, drop me a line.
My first suggestion is to partner with your favorite charity. Don't ever place a machine at a company that wants part of your profits. There are plenty of locations out there that are willing to let you put the machine in for free knowing you are giving a portion to charity. As for how much you give, you should discuss that with the charity. They will usually give you a written agreement with a termination clause that suits both parties comfort levels.
It took me about one year to completely pay off what I had invested. I'm amazed that it is so simple to get locations with my method and I don't pay the locations a dime.
Be careful of advertisements selling existing routes. Nine times out of ten they are trying to sell you the locations that aren't making them enough money for it to be worth their time. You wind up spending all your time working hard to pay off machines that you could've purchased and located yourself.
I admit, when I first started I paid a locator. When I saw how easy it was, I never used one again. Since then I have been able to place my own successfully (I take the lesson as an educational experience).
